Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Cortland Elementary School in Ohio, which was home to students from third to fifth grade final year, has been closed. The building has housed students for 132 years, as well as will now go up for auction in the fall incase a government entity declines to purchase it. The mayor toured the building while considering buying it for conversion into a community center, but he said that the building wasn’t built to be used as anything other than a school.

The Ohio School Facilities Commission has estimated that building demolition would cost $1 million, $800,000 of which would be used for asbestos abatement. The asbestos has been encapsulated, so the building is protected as it is, but it would become a hazard incase the building was demolished.
