$15k awarded for asbestos cancer research

United-4 a Cure presented over $100,000 in awards for cancer research at a intimate reception in Orland Park, Illinois at the end of July. Award recipients included the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Haining Yang of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, Dr. Eugene A. Choi of the University of Chicago Cancer Research Center as well as Dr. Joseph I. Clark of Loyola University Health examination Center – Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center.

Some of the awards will be spent on research concerning Metastasis Melanoma treatment, the mechanism as well as progression of pancreatic cancer, as well as a tissue sample database. Dr. Haining Yang will take his $15,541 award to help identify a gene that leaves some people more susceptible to developing mesothelioma as well as other asbestos-related cancers.

The cancer research awards were funded by the proceeds from the 21st Annual Valentine’s Ball at the Riviera Country Club earlier this year. Next year’s dinner dance fundraiser is scheduled for February 20, 2010.
