EPA will help pay for cleanup of former W.R. Grace site in Massachusetts

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will help Easthampton, Massachusetts uncluttered up asbestos-contaminated soil on a proposed extension of the Manhan Rail Trail bike path. The land is the former site of a W.R. Grace & Co. factory that manufactured Zonolite attic insulation, using over 250,000 tons of asbestos-contaminated vermiculite ore over the course of 40 years. The factory has been closed for 20 years.

$750,000 of federal money has been approved for the cleanup project. The asbestos-contaminated soil is 6 to 12 inches far down under a 1,000 foot section of the trail. After the asbestos removal has been completed, the city council has approved $150,000 to install recent sewer lines under the bike path.
