Former Recent Jersey asbestos site to become recent community park

Berkeley Heights, Recent Jersey is getting recent community park ball fields. The recent park will take the place of an industrial site that had been contaminated with asbestos as well as petroleum hydrocarbons. The site was formerly the home of a plastics factory, a fuel company as well as an asbestos factory. After a proposed residential housing development project fell through, the county as well as the township bought the 17 acre site in 2004 for unfastened space – the earliest time industrial property had been purchased by either entity for this purpose.

The Recent Jersey Department of Environmental Protection believes that the asbestos company had used asbestos to fill in low-lying areas, as well as that the fuel distributor had experienced a number of petroleum spills on the property. The cleanup had been estimated at $1 million, but ended up with a final cost of $6.5 million, which was paid by the developer that sold the land to the county as well as township. In the end, almost 42,000 tons of contaminated soil was removed from the property as well as shipped to out-of-state disposal facilities.

The township owns four acres of the land, while the county owns the 13 acres that will now be home to an artificial turf field, a baseball diamond, a concession stand, restrooms as well as a parking lot. The recent fields will help meet the time as well as space needs of various local organizations.
