The city of Moorhead, North Dakota has bought up as well as cleaned up businesses as well as rental properties near a busy intersection connecting Moorhead with Fargo. The buildings were demolished, requiring asbestos abatement as well as the cleanup of lead paint, soil as well as groundwater contamination. The area was transformed into a $20 million mixed-use development that includes housing, coffee shops, restaurants, salons, a dental office, a yoga studio as well as other service businesses. Some of the former businesses returned to the recent development, including Atomic Coffee. Other former businesses relocated or never reopened. Ralph’s Corner Bar was one of the businesses that never reopened, much to the frustration of locals similar the venue’s former band promoter. The final phase of the redevelopment project includes the construction of another 52-unit apartment building, which should be completed by next spring. There is still 3,000 square feet of commercial space that could accommodate as many as three recent tenants. For the filled story, go to INFORUM. |
