Mesothelioma and Asbestos

Variety columnist Army Archerd died of mesothelioma on September 8 at the age of 87. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Archerd was believed to possess developed mesothelioma as a result of his exposure during his service with the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Archerd began working in Hollywood fair after high school in 1941, working in the mailroom at Paramount. When World War II began, he joined the Navy. After his return from Navy service, he dove into journalism head earliest, helping to unfastened the Associated Press bureau at Hollywood Citizen News in 1945. He worked his way through the ranks until he was hired by Daily Variety as a columnist in 1953. He continued to write his column there until September 1, 2005, after which time he continued to contribute in other ways, including a blog for Variety.com that he final wrote for on July 27. Archerd as well as served as the official greeter of the Academy Awards for 47 years. He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1984. Archerd is survived by his wife, son as well as two stepsons.
