The Colorado Department of Community Health has given Pueblo County as well as city officials approval of their plan to cover as well as cap the former Pueblo Chilly Storage site. The county had purchased the burned-out building for $750,000 to get it cleaned up, but there is a legal battle concerning the cost of the cleanup. Approval of the recent plan will allow the county to remove soil that is contaminated with the toxic mineral asbestos to a hazardous waste disposal site. The former building site will then be capped with soil as well as asphalt. The county must still wait for the city’s approval, but. The capping project will cost an estimated $550,000 to total.
