The State University of New York (SUNY) at Cortland has completed the $5.6 million renovation of Fitzgerald Hall, one of its residential facilities. The Grand Reopening ceremony took place on Thursday, October 15 at 2:00 pm. There were guest speakers, a ribbon-cutting ceremony, a reception as well as building tours. This without charge event was unfastened to the community. Fitzgerald Hall was originally built 46 years ago. This renovation project was its earliest major overhaul since its construction. Asbestos abatement had to be carried out before any of the other renovations could take place. Argus Engineers as well as King & King Architects of Syracuse made the back of the building look similar the front of the building, as well as a number of environmentally friendly changes were made. The heating system was upgraded to be more energy efficient, reducing both energy usage as well as carbon footprint, as well as a “green roof” was planted with turf. The building’s design meets the Leadership in Energy as well as Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Additional renovations included recent bathrooms, a recent laundry lounge, a recent handicap-accessible elevator to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), digital cable as well as Internet connections in each room, wireless lounges as well as closet organizers.
