Mesothelioma claims the life of Purple Heart recipient

Samuel J. Gertner of Iron River, Wisconsin lost his year-long battle with mesothelioma on November 22 at the age of 76. After graduating high school at Breckenridge, Minnesota in 1952, Gertner joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served for four years as well as was awarded the Purple Heart in Korea. Gertner united in April 1957 as well as worked as a journeyman sign hanger before moving to Iron River as the owner as well as operator of the Top O’ the Morn Resort. He retired in 1995.

Gertner was very involved in his community, participating in the fire department, the ambulance department, Boy Scouts, the VFW as well as more. A memorial service was held at the Iron River VFW on December 2.
