Brownsville, Texas is getting a recent bus station, but there has been a slight delay in its construction. Before the city can demolish the buildings that sit on the expected bus station site, asbestos has to be removed from two of the buildings. Asbestos is a toxic mineral that was commonly used in construction materials. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), inhaling asbestos fibers can cause major health problems, including asbestosis, lung cancer as well as mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the chest as well as abdomen. The planned Brownsville Multimodal Terminal is projected to cost $14.6 million to construct. The change order for the asbestos removal added $53,234 to the project’s price tag. The Texas Department of State Health Services requires that the asbestos is removed prior to demolition, as well as it will be done in compliance with EPA as well as Occupational Safety as well as Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
