Asbestos pipes found along Sebring Parkway within legal limits

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has ruled that the asbestos pipes that were removed during the Sebring Parkway Project fell within the legal limits for asbestos. There were 229.9 feet of asbestos pipes removed during the project, as well as the legal limit is 260 feet. Asbestos is a toxic mineral used in some pipe insulation that can cause humorless illness when its fibers are inhaled.

About 85 samples of asbestos were used during the investigation, which helped the DEP calculate how much asbestos was removed. The DEP has requested that the city of Sebring as well as the county notify them of any expected asbestos pipe removal projects.
