Three entities possess been fined by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for asbestos violations related to a demolition project at Newport Naval Station in Newport, Rhode Island. The Navy base, A.A. Asbestos Abatement Co. as well as Goel Services, Inc. allegedly violated both the federal Uncluttered Air Act as well as the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants for Asbestos, more commonly referred to as Asbestos NESHAP, during a February 2009 demolition project. During demolition, the EPA stated that the Naval Station as well as the contractors failed to properly seal asbestos waste in leak-tight containers while the materials were still damp. A.A. Asbestos Abatement as well as Newport Naval Station had already been cited for failure to provide the EPA with proper written notification before the asbestos work began. The three parties now possess to pay a $14,238 penalty as well as certify that they are currently in compliance with Asbestos NESHAP regulations. While these regulations are in place to protect the health of workers as well as the community, the EPA was not aware of any specific harm caused by these particular violations.
