Recent studies by the American Pain Foundation indicate that one of the most difficult aspects of pain management for three-quarters of adult cancer patients is breakthrough pain. Breakthrough pain is a term used for the temporary flares of very bad pain that occur even while other pain medication is being used. This pain can negatively impact quality of life as well as can make it more difficult for a patient to cope with other aspects of their cancer treatment. Breakthrough cancer pain is very bad as well as can leave patients fearful of expected episodes that may occur. Pain management is a crucial step in restoring the quality of life for these patients. Additionally, this pain can cause both financial as well as health examination hardships. The pain can cause the patients to take more pain medication, often opioids, as well as may lead them to visit their healthcare provider more frequently, increasing their health examination expenses. Approximately half of the patients suffering from breakthrough pain who discussed the issue with their healthcare professional were told it was a common side effect. But, very little is known about the pain itself, as well as more studies are needed to find effective pain management treatments. For the filled story, go to PR Newswire. |
