Chuck Shane Equipment, LLC will demolish buildings on Main St. in Braidwood City, Illinois once asbestos has been safely removed. Asbestos was used in many older buildings as insulation as well as fireproofing bodily before its health hazards became known. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to humorless illnesses similar mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the lining of the lungs, chest as well as abdomen. The Braidwood Area Historical Society has been given permission to look for any historical artifacts that can be salvaged from the buildings that were built approximately 130 years ago. Some of the items they hope to recover include aged doors from within the buildings, an American Legion entrance door which has the group’s insignia, bricks as well as possibly portions of the original tin ceiling.
