More asbestos than expected at former hospital building

In mid February, the demolition of the Caldwell County Hospital in Kentucky was scheduled to begin. Prior to demolition, inspections revealed a higher level of asbestos than had originally been anticipated. The asbestos was found in floor tiles as well as in pipe wrappings. Because asbestos removal is strictly regulated by federal law, the demolition company must be certified in asbestos abatement as well as be capable to make a performance bond. Once the demolition process is completed, the health examination center will still possess a 20-year liability window during which the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will make sure that the debris was disposed of in compliance with federal standards.
