Early detection program created for those at high risk for lung cancer

The beginning stages of lung cancer typically possess no symptoms. But, as the disease becomes more advanced it is deadlier than colon cancer, prostate cancer as well as breast cancer combined. Some people such as smokers as well as those exposed to asbestos, nickel, radon, arsenic as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are at increased risk for developing lung cancer. These populations are the target group for the beginning detection program at Kent Hospital.

The recent test looks for nodules on the lungs using a low-dose CT scan. This isn’t a screening for lung cancer, but rather a way to proactively monitor high-risk patients as well as determine the need for further testing while the disease may still be treatable. Because it isn’t an approved screening method, it isn’t covered by insurance.
