The Common Aviation terminal in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was torn down on February 8, 2010. The terminal was originally scheduled for demolition four months earlier; but, the project was delayed because of the unexpected amounts of asbestos in the building. The contractor tasked with surveying the building had not fully accounted for all asbestos in the building. The county went to court regarding the asbestos as well as the increased cost of its removal. While watchful waiting for a court decision, the county decided to award the demolition contract to another company using the funds from the project budget as well as some additional contingency funds. The recent terminal building was built closer to the runway, about 50 yards from the previous terminal. The location of the aged terminal will be paved over to create parking for the recent terminal.
