Cancer researchers at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada possess identified the cancer molecule accountable for suppressing the immune system, preventing the body from blocking the growth as well as spread of cancerous cells. They possess developed a nanoparticle that fights cancer by binding to a protein in melanoma cells known to activate transcription-3, or STAT3, to inhibit the growth of cancerous tumors for a month at a time. Although the research is still in the beginning stages, scientists are hopeful that this discovery will lead to an immunotherapy that will allow the body’s immune system halt the spread of cancer.
