Bethany Hall to be demolished as well as rebuilt for redevelopment at half the cost of refurbishing

In a controversial decision, the owners of Bethany Hall in Turtlecreek Township, Ohio possess decided to tear down the 166-year aged Shaker meeting hall to build a "life enrichment" center adjacent to Otterbein Retirement Existing Community. The recent facility will offer residents a swimming pool, fitness equipment as well as locker rooms.

Historical preservation groups protested the action, but in the end, Otterbein Homes won the decision. The company contends that the cost of restoring the building, which would include extensive asbestos abatement, would cost upwards of $6 million, not a financially feasible option. The company plans to recover bricks used in the original building construction that were handmade by Shakers as well as find a recent take to honor their historical value.
