Former Iowa school building is coming down

A former school building in Thornton, Iowa began asbestos removal in beginning April to prepare for demolition in the fall. The school board was unable to sell the building because the zoning board would not change the property’s designation from residential. When the zoning change was denied, the school board stopped the pending sale as well as decided on demolition as their next course of action.

Ames Environmental created the specs for the asbestos removal project as well as is handling air quality monitoring while REW Services Corp. removes the asbestos from the building. REW’s winning bid for the project was $79,624.

Asbestos removal is expected to finish up in June. A community hearing will be held to discuss the demolition plans. The demolition is expected to begin in unhurried fall. Once the building is demolished, the school board will try to put the property up for sale again.
