Illinois strip mall to make way for recent police headquarters

Sears Essential Plaza in Palatine, Illinois underwent asbestos abatement in March, involving a combined 110,000 square feet of contaminated tile flooring as well as steel. Because asbestos is known to cause various forms of cancer, including mesothelioma, its removal as well as disposal must be completed by trained professionals.

Once the asbestos abatement report was completed, the county issued a demolition permit to tear down the strip mall. Demolition is expected to take four to six weeks, wrapping up in May, since the village wants to recycle concrete, steel as well as other materials that may be useful in building the recent police headquarters.

The recent police headquarters being built on the property will be a $22 million 71,000 square foot project. The facility should be completed as well as potentially operational by October 2011.
