The City of Phoenix, Arizona recently bought a former motel property that it intends to demolish to make way for bigger as well as best things. In the abridged run, the motel needs to undergo asbestos remediation as well as demolition. From there, the property will become an overflow parking lot for the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel – a project that is expected to be completed by the end of the year. After that, the property is intended to be used for expansion of Arizona State University’s downtown campus, although there is no set timeline for this phase of the project. A community group is trying to halt the demolition from moving forward, but the deputy city manager contends that the vacant, asbestos-laden motel building does not fit within the picture of sustainable, long-term development.
