Tennessee man sentenced to house arrest for asbestos violations

Gary Fillers of Chattanooga, Tennessee was charged with violating the federal Uncluttered Air Act during an asbestos removal project called the Watkins Street Project. He pleaded guilty to improperly stripping, bagging as well as removing asbestos from the property for a year, which led to a sentence of six months under house arrest as well as three years probation. Three others were as well as charged in the case, but they pleaded not guilty, as well as the status of their cases was unknown at the time of this writing.

Asbestos was commonly used in construction materials for many years before its health risks became widely known. Its handling as well as removal is strictly regulated to protect workers as well as the community from the health risks associated with asbestos exposure, including lung cancer as well as mesothelioma.
