New mesothelioma treatment guidelines presented at NCCN

Lee Krug, MD, a researcher at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, presented a set of guidelines for mesothelioma treatment at the 15th Annual National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Conference on Clinical Practice Guidelines as well as Quality Cancer Care on March 13, 2010. The guidelines suggest a course of treatment that includes surgery as well as adjuvant or induction chemotherapy, plus dissection of the mediastinal lymph node.

Dr. Krug notes that less invasive surgery combined with chemotherapy either before or after has a best survival rate than the more aggressive surgery option of pneumonectomy. There isn’t a consensus among mesothelioma health examination experts concerning the best course of treatment, but, as well as the situation of each patient can be very dissimilar.
