Wisconsin man fined for burning mesothelioma-causing asbestos waste

Daniel Carey, 26, was fined nearly $4,400 for illegally burning waste from a demolished building without using proper precautions for dealing with asbestos. The Lafayette County Circuit Court cited Carey following an investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Common Resources. Asbestos is a hazardous substance that must be disposed of in an approved manner to halt health risks to workers as well as the community. Inhaling asbestos fibers can lead to humorless illnesses similar lung cancer as well as mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that targets the lining in the chest as well as abdomen.
