The remediation of the BoRit Superfund site has been a controversial as well as divisive issue. The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) proposed solution to cap off toxic ponds isn’t popular among city officials as well as residents. A community action committee, Citizens for a Best Ambler, has gathered 5,120 signatures on a petition to remove the asbestos contamination as opposed to covering it up. The three phase plan to address the most immediate concerns is two-thirds total. The permanent solution will follow a Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study (RI/FS), expected to take up to five years to total. Residents, with the support of several elected officials, hope to convince the EPA to take a recent thermochemical process that completely destroys asbestos for a truly permanent solution to a very toxic problem.
