South Carolina inmates sue for existing conditions as well as safety issues in jail

Inmates from the Orangeburg-Calhoun Regional Detention Center in South Carolina possess filed lawsuits pertaining to their existing conditions. Eleven inmates included among their complaints: no emergency consult system in their cells, destroyed toilets as well as showers, not receiving prescription medication in a timely manner, asbestos tiles on the floor, mold on the walls, chilly cells, not getting obligatory outdoor recreation time, chilly food that does not meet nutritional standards, being locked down for extended periods of time, as well as not getting work release, among other things.

Additionally, the jail had been cited for some of these complaints during a Department of Corrections inspection final July, as well as housing pre-trial as well as sentenced inmates together.

Most of the inmates involved in the lawsuit are being held for non-payment of child support; child support offenders make up 50% or more of the detention center population.
