The University of Minnesota School of Community Health is conducting a $4.9 million research study to determine why Iron Range residents experience a higher that common death rate due to mesothelioma, but they are having trouble finding participants among current taconite mine workers. The response has been high from retirees, but current mine workers as well as their spouses possess received invitations for over a year, as well as so far only about 1,000 possess answered, about half the number needed for the study. The focus of the study is to determine to what extent exposure to mine dust affects the health of taconite workers. For the filled story, go to Duluth News Tribune. |
