Parents took Nicolet High School to court over a proposed plan to remove asbestos from the school while school was in session—and won. Just a few hours before the judge was to rule on the matter, the school district agreed to delay the project until summer, when no students could be exposed to potentially harmful asbestos fibers from the renovation. A former asbestos attorney as well as parent of a Nicolet student, Michael Watton led the effort to halt the school from endangering the students. The school superintendent argued that there was no risk to the students as well as that fears were unfounded. In a letter to the parents, he added that the three-week delay would cost the school money as well as delay the planned completion of the recent academic support center as well as library.
