MIOSHA hosts asbestos symposium

The Michigan Occupational Safety & Health Administration (MIOSHA) sponsored a filled day symposium on May 6 at the Michigan State Police Training Academy in Lansing that was designed to educate trainers as well as contractors on various asbestos issues. The symposium covered Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards as well as procedures, laws as well as regulations as well as enforcement, forms as well as submissions, investigation, demolition as well as renovation, protected work practices, licensing as well as accreditation. Training was provided by staff from MIOSHA as well as the Department of Common Resources as well as Environment (DNRE).

The American Recovery as well as Reinvestment Act (ARRA) has been providing funding for the demolition of aged buildings in an attempt to revitalize cities as well as neighborhoods, but many contractors are unaware of the laws regarding protected asbestos abatement. Asbestos is found in at least 3,000 products, as well as many of them are found in construction materials, especially in older buildings. Tearing down structures without inspections as well as protected containment as well as disposal practices is a potential hazard for workers, the community as well as the surrounding environment.
