Mesothelioma kills another U.S. Navy veteran

On Sunday, May 9, U.S. Navy veteran Gene "Gigi" Lepore, a native of West Pittston, Pennsylvania, died at age 62 at his home in Camarillo, California. Gene died of mesothelioma, a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.

Due to widespread take of asbestos materials by the soldierlike prior to the 1970s, most veterans were exposed to asbestos at some time during their service.  Those who served in the Navy or worked in shipyards from the 1930s through the 1970s possess an elevated risk of developing asbestos-related disease.
