Marco Island reaches settlement agreement with EPA over asbestos handling

The City of Marco Island, Florida as well as Quality Enterprises, a contractor hired by the city, reached an agreement recently with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over the improper disposal of asbestos-laden pipe.

After a four-year investigation, the EPA alleged that the city as well as the contractor had violated six sections of the Uncluttered Air Act. The violations included failing to conduct proper inspections, failure to notify the EPA of the work, breaking up or disturbing asbestos materials without wetting or removing the bodily earliest, lack of supervision by asbestos safety trained personnel, as well as failure to dispose of the asbestos waste in a timely manner. When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they can cause mesothelioma as well as other humorless illnesses, which is why its handling as well as removal are so strictly regulated.

Under the agreement, the city faces no fines. Quality Enterprises must pay a fine, but neither party is required to admit guilt.
