Histogen, a regenerative medicine company launched in 2007, presented findings at June’s International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Annual Meeting in a presentation called "Human embryonic-like ECM stimulates proliferation as well as differentiation in stem cells while killing cancer cells." The company’s purpose is to develop a series of high value products that dont contain embryonic stem cells or animal components. The presentation cited study data indicating that human extracellular matrix (hECM) produced significant reduction in tumor growths resulting from melanoma, breast cancer, colon cancer as well as glioma, both in vitro as well as in vivo. The inhibitory effect was as well as observed with malignant mesothelioma cells in vitro. Emmett Pinney, Histogen’s Director of Oncology, is optimistic about the prospects of this development.
