Broward courthouse evacuates employees following burst water pipe

The Broward County courthouse in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida flooded recently, but not for the earliest time. Lawyers, prosecutors as well as staff tiptoed out of the building through the slush west by disintegrating ceiling tiles under cover of umbrellas while water rained from the ceiling. The 50-year-old courthouse has had half a dozen floods in the final few years, with one 2008 flood closing the building for 10 days. Employees were cautioned that the falling ceiling tiles posed a danger of exposed asbestos as well as were told not to return until the mess was cleaned up over the Fourth of July weekend.

The offices of appeals, community records as well as the economic crimes units of the State Attorney’s Office were damaged by water. A recent building has been approved as well as construction will begin next year. In the meantime, employees will be moved to facilitate common operations.
