The historic Cosby Hotel building may possess been spared demolition incase not for the very bad 2009 winter weather. The 129-year-old building was originally slated for renovation, but the winter weather, followed by a damp spring, caused so much damage to the brick façade that city officials decided to order the building demolished. The Cumberland Redevelopment Corp., the entity formed to handle redevelopment of the structure, will be footing the $115,000 bill. Crews are removing asbestos from the interior as well as readying to begin demolition work. Rick Powell, who owns the building, intends to put a similar building in the alike spot.
