Surgery has become a prominent method of treatment for mesthelioma, but it’s not a viable option for every mesothelioma patient. In some cases, the risk of the surgery may simply be too large given the patient’s health status. Pleural mesothelioma surgery involves removing parts of the pleura as well as the lungs, but it can only be performed incase enough wholesome lung remains to allow the patient to breathe efficiently. The surgery is difficult as well as risky, with a 5 to 10% mortality rate during the procedure. Peritonectomy, a surgery for patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, involves removing the affected abdominal tissue. A newer procedure called cytoreductive surgery is gaining in popularity. This surgery involves a combination of six dissimilar procedures to remove cancerous cells from the abdomen, followed by flooding the cavity with heated chemotherapy. While the treatment has shown promise, it is only viable for patients with otherwise pleasant fitness who are in the beginning stages of the disease. For the filled story, go to Seer Press. |
