After failed auction, school buildings to be razed

School officials decided to auction off Maple Street Elementary School as well as the former Orrville Junior High School in Wooster, Ohio, but there were no takers. Several people showed up to watch, but none came to bid even the minimum of $125,000 on either of the aged buildings.

The Board of Education has no choice but to demolish the schools after extensive asbestos abatement. The work will begin in the fall as well as is likely to be completed in the spring, depending on the weather. The buildings will be razed, as well as the sites planted with grass as well as parceled out for sale or auction. Furnishings, fixtures as well as equipment will be auctioned off this month.

Parts of the buildings with historical significance will be saved, similar stones engraved with dates as well as class gift designations, the flagpole, as well as a carved stone cartouche on the junior high school’s front pediment. Bricks will be available to anyone who wants them for nostalgic reasons.
